How to check your immigration case with USCIS and the court (EOIR)

6 min · Published Oct 19, 2026 · Updated Oct 20, 2026 · Official USCIS / EOIR data

How to check your USCIS case with your receipt number and your immigration court case with your A-Number: online, by phone and what you will see.

Track your case with Inmigreat

Inmigreat follows your USCIS and immigration court (EOIR) case and alerts you when it changes.

Your immigration case can be in two different systems: USCIS, which handles applications and petitions (for example Forms I-485, I-130 or I-765), and the immigration court (EOIR), part of the Department of Justice, where your case is before an immigration judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA). Each one is checked with a different number.

If you received documents from the court, your case is followed through EOIR. For a closer look at that system, read how to check your immigration court case.

How to check your USCIS case

  1. Find your receipt number. When USCIS accepts your application it sends you a receipt notice; the receipt number at the top can be used to check your status online (USCIS TPS page, step 2).
  2. Go to Case Status Online (uscis.gov/casestatus). USCIS describes it as the tool to track the status of an immigration application, petition or request.
  3. Create or use your USCIS online account. Per the Contact Center page, the account lets you sign up for automatic case alerts, see processing times, upload evidence, update your address and send secure messages. If you filed on paper and your receipt number begins with IOE, USCIS mailed you a letter with user codes (valid for 90 days) to create the account; if it begins with other letters, you can create an account and add your paper-filed case.

When you see a status message, you can look up what it usually means on our page about USCIS case status meanings, and compare it with processing times.

If you need to talk to USCIS

The Contact Center number is 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833). Its automated system answers general questions 24 hours a day in English and Spanish, and live assistance runs Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. USCIS notes that if you ask about your case status, you will be directed to Case Status Online or your online account.

How to check your immigration court (EOIR) case

Court cases are checked with your A-Number, not a receipt number: online in EOIR’s Automated Case Information system or by phone at 1-800-898-7180 (EOIR, Check Case Status). EOIR notes that court documents such as hearing notices are the official source on case status.

Common mistakes

  • Looking up a court case in USCIS (or the other way around). They are separate systems with different numbers.
  • Relying only on the screen. Keep and read the notices you get by mail: they are the official documents.
  • Not checking before a hearing. Use the EOIR line close to the date and confirm any change with your representative, if you have one.

Frequently asked questions
Which number do I need to check my case?

It depends on the system. For USCIS you use the receipt number at the top of your receipt notice. For the immigration court (EOIR) you use your A-Number, which begins with the letter A followed by 8 or 9 digits and is printed on DHS and EOIR correspondence.

Can I check my court case by phone?

Yes. EOIR runs an automated case information line at 1-800-898-7180. Enter the 9 digits of your A-Number without the letter A; if it has 8 digits, enter a 0 first.

Is the EOIR system's information official?

EOIR warns that ACIS information is provided for convenience only. The only official determinations in your case are the documents the immigration court or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) issues to you or your representative.

Does the USCIS Contact Center have more status information than the website?

Not on status. USCIS says Case Status Online and your online account have the same status information available to the Contact Center, and callers asking about case status are directed to those tools.
