A driver's license is essential for getting a job in the United States. In such a big country is difficult and slow to move out without a car. For example, Florida has more than 121,000 miles of highways. That is why many employers mandatory require a driver's license.

In addition, a driver's license is a form of identification. You can use your driving card to verify your identity if you apply for a job, rent an apartment, or open a bank account.

1.- Identify what type of license you need

Firstly, you must identify what type of license you want to obtain. To drive commercial motor vehicles four-wheel drive, such as trailers, buses, and other large vehicles, you will need a driver's license from type A, B y C.

  • Class A: Allows you to drive vehicles over 26,000 pounds, with a trailer weighing up to 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: Allows you to drive vehicles over 26,000 pounds but without a trailer.
  • Class C: Allows you to drive passenger transport such as vans and small buses.

If you want to drive non-commercial vehicles like cars and motorcycles, you can apply for a license  D to E.

2.- Meet the requirements to obtain a driver's license in your state

Unlike many Latin American countries in the United States, there isn't a valid driver's license for the whole territory. It means that each state issues a license valid only in its territory. Also, there are different requirements when it comes to taking it out.

However, all States demand to meet specific requirements that can be general for all the country. For example, to apply for a driver's license in Florida is necessary:

  • To be older than 16.
  • Present a valid identification document: Passport or birth certificate, permanent resident card, or proof of lawful immigration status. 
  • Introduce a social security number (not required for parole recipients, as long as possess the Form I-94: Arrival/Departure Record)
  • Present proof of residence: That can be utility bills or a lease in your name that allows you to demonstrate that you currently live in that state.

3.- Complete the TLSAE driver education course

Other requirements to apply for a driver's license in the United States are:

  • Complete a driver education course (in the case of Florida the TLSAE course)

The Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE)  is a mandatory 4-hour driver's education course. National Highway Safety Administration delivers this course, which can be online and costs a minimum of $19.

In case you have already passed a similar course in another state, you must present proof of completion.

4.- Prepare for the theoretical driving test.

To get a driver's license in the United States you must pass a written and practical driving test. The written one assesses your knowledge of the road rules, while the practical test evaluates your ability to drive safely.

Before thinking about attending the exam, a step that you should NOT skip is the preparation to take these tests. You can study your state's driver's manual or submit to a driver's education course to learn the road rules and improve your driving skills. It is recommended to take mock exams online based on the exam prototypes of the Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV) of the state you will be taking the test.

5.- Present the theoretical driving test

The DMV is the agency that issues driver's licenses in each state. These are also the ones who take the theoretical and practical driving tests.

The cost of the exams and required documentation varies from state to state. In general, the written exam costs between $20 and $50, and the practical one costs between $50 and $100.

6.- Presenting the practical driving test

Taking a driving test can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Following these tips, it is possible to increase your chances of passing the test and getting a driver's license.

  • Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. It means coming with transport in good condition and having liability insurance.
  • Get lots of practice. If you are a new driver, consider taking driving lessons with a professional instructor.
  • Take all security measures: When getting into the car, you must put on your seat belt, check and adjust the rear-view mirrors, and check that your turn signals and lights work correctly.
  • Know the rules of the road. Before taking the test, confirm that you understand your state's traffic laws. You can find this information online or in the driver's manual.
  • Dress appropriately. You must be able to move freely and comfortably while driving. Avoid wearing anything uncomfortable that can restrict your movements, such as long skirts or dresses.
  • Arrive early. This way, you will have time to relax and become familiar with the test area.
